Hastelloy B2 (UNS N10665, W.Nr 2.4617) and B3 (UNS N10675, W.Nr 2.4600) are nickel-molybdenum alloys with about 28% molybdenum, designed for strongly reducing environments, above all hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, plus hydrogen chloride gas and sulphuric, acetic and phosphoric acids. B3 is the improved version, with better thermal stability during fabrication than B2. The B alloys are specialists, not all-rounders. They give exceptional service in pure reducing acids but corrode rapidly if ferric or cupric ions, or oxygen, are present, so always check for oxidising contaminants. Hastelloy B2 and B3 offer outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid and other reducing media, along with resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking and pitting. B3 retains ductility better through welding and heat cycles, which makes fabrication more forgiving.

Typical: unsuitable where ferric or cupric ions or oxygen are present; use C-type alloys instead.
