Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803 / S32205, W.Nr 1.4462) is a stainless steel with a roughly equal mix of austenite and ferrite. That balanced structure gives about twice the yield strength of 316L, much better resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and good pitting and crevice resistance from 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and nitrogen. S32205 is the tighter, higher-nitrogen version of S31803, and most material today is dual-certified. Duplex 2205 is the usual upgrade when 316L suffers chloride cracking or pitting, and its higher strength often allows thinner walls and lighter structures. Above about 300 °C it is not recommended, because embrittling phases can form, and welding needs controlled procedures to keep the phase balance.
